Of course, u want to add more people but at the same time you do not want your private information to leak out to people you don't know. The low cost airline based in Singapore had made several headlines in the past for its not-up-to standard service... but it's cheap! :) ROAR!

Australia's low cost airline has recently made Singapore its Asian hub. :D
I like the fact that it operates in Terminal 1 instead of budget terminal. haha.. cos this means that I can use the facilites and shop inside Terminal 1.

Malaysian's low cost airline.. I read somewhere that its nasi lemak is good. haha. I think I read it from Budget Tai Tai's column in the Today's newspaper. haha.

Lion Air...
The first time I heard about this Indonesian airline was from my vietnamese friend. I ask her what airline does she usually take and she said "Lion air." I replied "U mean Tiger Air?" She said "no, Lion air, there is tiger air and a lion air." I was thinking"oh. I am so sua gu" :/ haha. anyway.. I just found out that Lion air is one of listed in the list of air carriers banned in EU due to safety concerns.
I expect 2 kinds of reactions when people read this
1. Aiyoh. My life is worth more than anything else
2. Nevermind la, if is fate to die than die lor..
I have the first reaction.

Some of my friends use Zuji, the online travel company owned by Travelocity to compare prices of airlines. They have a Facebook fan page where you can take part in some of their contests and win vouchers. I haven't win any though. Maybe u can win them.

If u are like most Singaporeans who like to travel, you should check out this site about reviews on Travel agents, 100 best and 100 worst.

It's useful in making decisions if two travel agencies offer similar package and price almost the same. U can give ur views too! Recommend great travel agencies and discourage future travellers from choosing bad ones..

I have never heard of many of the travel agencies listed there.. good place to check out travel agencies instead of relying on the usual few that are often advertised on the newspapers.

Fines on MRT

The authorities recently carried out a fine for punishing those who were eating or drinking on the MRT. It caught a lot of people's attention and many people had mixed opinions on that. Nevertheless, I feel that it is great that the authorities is finally taking action. I have seen so many people eating on the trains in the past and it really makes people around them feel uncomfortable.

However, the crackdown may be too harsh. Even eating someting as small as a sweet, one is liable for a fine of $30 if caught. See the newspaper article here. Perhaps, they should just fine people only if they throw the sweet wrappers on the ground.

Yay. Singapore Fool festival starts tomorrow! 17 July.
What I am looking forward to is the Peranakan Parade that is happening tomorrow at the clarke Quay. I think that the Perankan culture is a very interesting culture. I wanna see them in real life, with their traditional costume.

Another event to look out for during the festival is the Longest Perankan Buffet Line. There, you can try up to 100 peranakan dishes.. which O believe tastes good and I have always wanted to try some of the dishes that were featured in "The Little Nonya" that was screened earlier in the year. It's really interesting.

Haha. I am quite excited. Are you? haha.

Anyway, the Great Singapore Sale is still on!
It lasts till 26th July! Only 10 more days! I better come out a list to see what I still need to buy.. before the Great Singapore sale is over!!

My teacher said during history lesson that Singapore is like a mini preview of Asia.
Singapore, besides having 4 main different races (CIMO), has places that showcase different parts of Asia.

Chinese - Chinatown
Malay - Kampong Glam and Arab Street
Indian - Little India
Korean - Korea Plaza
Thai - Golden Mile Complex

In addition to that, there are many restaurants and stalls offering food from Japan, Korea, Thailand, the middle east etc. No wonder why my korean friends didn't feel so homesick after 4 months stay here. She can get so many korean food here.

Education. School.

Education... is what many parents want for their child, especially in Singapore. Stress ah! That is something most children would say.
Why Education?
Many would say that it helps to break the vicious cycle of poverty.
Many would say that knowledge is power that is why we should acquire knowledge and one way to do that is educatng since young.

Yea.. we can go on and on and on about it..
Education brings so much benefits.. to the fact that the government makes education compulsory for all Singaporeans, perhaps hoping that Singapore will achieve 100% literacy rate in time to come.

What does Education means to you? especially if you are a student?
Does it means stirring up your curiosity and the thirst for knowledge or does it mean rote memorising - results matter?

Tuition tuition and tuition.
Is it really for your kids? Do your kids really need it or do u want it just because other kids has it?

Best schools. No doubt, parents want the best for their children.
Singapore, I think has a interesting way of registering kids for their primary 1 education.
Parents who are staying within 2km of the school have higher priority of their child getting into that school.
Parents have done voluntary work in the school have higher priority of their child getting into that school.

SAP (Special Assistance Plan) schools, autonomous schools and government schools.
Many of course wants to send their child to SAP schools and autonomous schools.
I noticed that sometimes, students from non-government schools have a kind of different way of looking at life and people from students from government schools.
I can't say whether it is good or bad, but I can say that they really view things differently. I think it's probably due to the culture, and every school has its own culture. Especially for non government schools, there have already been several stereotypes placed on students who are from a particular school.

But do students from non-government schools score better than students from government schools? Not necessarily.
Some non-government schools may attract brighter brains because of the prestige linked to that particular school, but I can say that not all students are genius and not some students from government schools are even smarter than those in non-government schools.

However, I must admit that sometimes, in non-government schools, facilities or different methods may be better.

Sometimes, it's a choice of being a big fish in a small pond or being a small fish in a big pond.

Ice Water?

Somehow and somewhere in our time of life, we would have a need to drink a bottle of plain water and mineral water.
If u want a bottle of plain water that is of reasonable price and does not have a funny taste, I would recommend Ice Mountain.

I think it does not have a weird taste, neither is it too expensive. So, if you really need a bottle of plain water, try Ice Mountain. =)

Getting around by buses

Yesterday, I met a vietnamese student who knows how to get from almost any place to almost any place in Singapore without getting lost at all. I was planning a trip out with her yesterday and she told me which buses to take to go to which places and where to alight.

Wow. A student like her who has been here barely a year can get to know Singapore's streets so well. Out of curiosity, I asked her what's her secret?

She told me it's because she is armed with the Singapore Bus guide and the Singapore Map. Therefore, she knows how to get to places easily without getting lost.

Talking about buses, I know many of my friends overseas has this gripe that Singapore buses do not has a voice recording to tell you the name of each bus-stop the bus goes to. As a result, many of them do not know when to alight and often alight at the wrong bus-stop.

Perhaps, the remedy to this is to get your own bus guide, like my cute vietnamese friend, and carry it with you so that you know how many more stops to alight. If you carry your laptop with you or you have a Wi-Fi phone, you can access the free e-bus guide online. (using the free wireless@SG Internet connection).

There is also a list of bus services at every bus stop so you can see how many more stops to your desired destination.

Another alternative solution is to ask the bus driver where to stop and to alert you when he reaches the bus stop.

If all else fails, take a taxi, which is the simplest and fastest way to get to the destination you want. =D

Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay

The Esplanade.

How do you pronounce it?
Some people pronounce it as 'Es-pler-nade' while some pronounce it as 'Es-pler-nard'.
Some people think it shapes like a durian, while others think the building looks like the eyes of a mosquito.
Whatever the case, it's really a cool building. It is a theatre where you can dine, shop or watch performances. At some certain times, you can even watch performances for free!

When you are there, besides taking photos, I recommend you to go to

The Library - a really nice place with a large variety of books on performing arts.
The rooftop where you can enjoy a nice scenery.

Recently, I met a girl from Norway. It was her first time in Singapore and one of the questions she asked me was "Why are there so many tall buildings in Singapore?"

Haha. Of course there are many tall buildings or skyscrapers in Singapore. Singapore is small and land is limited. We could not expand sideways but the only way to expand is to go higher and higher.. but of course.. going there are limits to how tall a building can be... due to some issues.

Haha. But nevertheless, most of us gets to live in high-rise buildings which we do not need to face disgusting creatures like rats.. Most of us live in HDB flats.. as statistics had stated, at least 85% of Singaporeans live in HDB flats.

So, if some one asks u why does Singapore has so many high-rise buildings, u have the answer =)

Fine City?

Hello..

Around Singapore, u can see many signs that does not permit people to do something or else they will be fined. One example is smoking.

Some of this may get on the nerves of some people, and they call Singapore a "Fine" City because there are many things that are prohibited or they will get fined. However, with all these fines, it make us a fine city. The country is clean and the government is great! =)

H1N1: My Views

hAs of 26th June, there are a total of 365 cases in Singapore! Oh no.. and the number is going to increase. Luckily, there's cure for this H1N1 and it's not as deadly as SARS.
Yesterday's The Straits Times published a section of Q&A about H1N1. If you missed it, let me tell u some parts of it which I think is important and what I think about it.

Q: I hear that you catch H1N1 flu only if an infected person sneezes or coughs near you.

A: Wrong. The virus remains alive on many surfaces for several hours. If an infected person who has some of the virus on his fingers presses a lift button and you press that button a little later, the virus could stick to your finger. If you then rub your nose or touch your eyes, it could infect you.

My Views:
Oh MY!!! ALAMAK! The virus is spread so easily. We do not know who has H1N1 or not.. and since 85% of us live in HDB flats, we are vulnerable to the virus. These does not apply to lift buttons, the Bell button, escalator handles are included too!! ahh!

Maybe we should wash our hands immediately when we reach home. Do not hold the escalator handles unnecessary. We can actually stand on the escalator without the need to hold onto the handles right? If u can't, I think u need to work on the your skill of balancing.

Q: How far away do I need to be from someone who is sneezing, if I want to be safe?

A: Generally, droplets spray out a metre. But a fan or air-conditioning could spread them out a little further. The droplets fall to the ground and do not remain suspended in the air.

My Views:
In Singapore, there are so many air-condition rooms as we have so many shopping centres and such.. also, it's hot here especially in this period of time, many of us prefer to stay indoors.. staying indoors with air-cons will make us more vulnerable.. I think we should stay at least 2 metres away from the person since 1 metre would not be enough.

Q: I'm in a crowded MRT Train and the person standing in front of me is sneezing. What should I do?

A: Offer him a clean tissue if he is not using one. Turn your face away when he sneeze. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue.

My Views:
I'm on the MRT almost everyday and I rarely see people using a tissue when he sneezes. Anyway, u see.. the article also say that you should turn your face away when he sneezes. If u see me turning away.. dun say I'm too sensitive or kiasi or whatever ok.. it's playing safe. haha.

If u haven't tried the coffee before and wanna know how good it taste? Here is my take:
I think it's nicer than most coffee shop's coffee but of course, it can't be compared to the goodness of Starbucks and Coffee Beans' Coffee.. But look, the price between the coffee in Starbucks and Toast Box varies a great deal too! haha.

If u ask me about Ya Kun's coffee and Toast Box, I think they are pretty much the same but many of my friends prefer Ya Kun's coffee. haha.

Online photo printing and storage

Recently, my friend recommended me this site called snapfish.
She told me that it the cost of printing each photo, 19 cents per piece is really really reasonable and she recommended me to try it. 19 cents.. really reasonable. I think the price I get outside usually ranges from 20cents to 40 cents. 19 cents is really worth it, especially if u have lots of photos to be printed.. u know, economies of scale. haha.

So I went to snapfish singapore website to take a look.

I realised that the 19 cents does not include postage and packing.
Snapfish is by HP, a rather reliable and trusted brand.
Besides that, they offer free sharing and storage space..
which I think is really convenient because u can just upload it onto one place.. choose which to share and which to print.
You do not need to upload too many times. one for sharing. one for printing.

Hmm.. I will try the service if I have photos to print and see how good it is. ;)

According to the news article published on asiaone.com's website today, Stereotypes worldwide associate men with science.

It reminded me of what my teacher said in secondary school.

There was once when in school, everyone thought that guys would score better than girls in Physics while girls are likely to score better in Chemistry. He dispelled the belief by telling us that the top pupil for Physics for the past 2 years is a female while the top pupil for that year in Chemistry is a male.
He told us that what we had on our mind was just a typical stereotype which isn't necessary true.

From then on, all of us work hard I think the myth was hardly mention anymore during my time in Secondary School.
Teachers do make a great impact!

If you ever got onto the a MRT station you will probably hear this phrase
"Sila ambil perhatian demi keselamatan anda harap bediri di belakang garisan kuning."
Haha, yes, it is the Malay version of "Your attention please, Please stand behind the yellow line."
What I realised is that many people follow the instructions by standing behind the yellow line, but not the yellow arrows. Even though they drew arrows on the ground, many people are still standing at the centre, wanting to get into the train at the very first moment the MRT doors open. Haha. Do u agree?

Hey! How r u today? My day is fine! Let me share with you about a book.
If you have been studying in Singapore's primary school or secondary school long enough, you surely will have heard of this guy called Adam Khoo. He has been giving motivational talks and courses islandwide to students to motivate them to be an achiever.

He published a book titled I Am Gifted, So Are You!, which tells u how to score well and how to study in examinations. He, himself was an underachiever and how he managed to score straight As. He shares methods and tips on how to score well and how to study.

There are many useful information which includes
-Setting Goals
-Drawing Mindmaps
-How to Answer Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) which I thought was really useful.

If you really want to score well in the examinations, I think that the book will be useful to you.

Footwear in Singapore

I was on the MRT today and I realised that many of us have something in common - Slippers.

If you have been to Singapore, you will realise that Singaporeans love to wear slippers or if you prefer, flip flops. We wear them to almost everywhere, for shopping, playing at the beach or just for a walk at the park. It's very convenient, you just have to slip those slippers on and off u go! It's very comfortable too! especially in a country where the weather is humid. The best thing is that it's cheap too! U can get a pair of slippers for as low as S$2.. but of course, as the saying goes "if u pay peanuts, u get monkey", the quality may not be good.

Jasmine Green Teas in Singapore

Hello!

How's ur day today?
I went to the supermarket to bought a packet of Jasmine green tea to drink. Yea.. I know, it's a packet of soft drink - green tea, not the orignial sachet where you have to pour it hot water on it. haha. Why packet of green tea? Convenient and great taste! I can drink it cold too!

In Singapore, there are actually two famous brand of Green Tea: Pokka and Heaven and Earth. I love both of them, but I think the better one is the Pokka brand. It's because the Pokka's green tea is richer in taste and has stronger aroma. No wonder it is Singapore's best selling brand! =D

Studying at Cafes

Starbucks, Coffee Bean, Spinelli, TCC, Cafe Galilee etc. What do they have in common? Yea! All of them sell coffee! Coffee chains!

The news recently reported that singaporean students love studying at cafes. You can read the reports from here and here.

Why study at cafes?
Benefits are lots!
-Nice atmosphere
-Air-conditioned
-Place to gather with your friends. You can chat with your friends whenever you want, unlike in the library where you have to keep really quiet at all times.

Besides cafes, many even go to fast food restaurants such as McDonalds, KFC, Long John Silvers to study. haha.

Jim Rogers' latest Book - A gift to my Children

As you may know, Jim Rogers and his family have moved to Singapore. Recently, published a book titled A gift to my children. Out of curiousity, I went to read his newly published book. Even when I was reading halfway, I was like "WOW!". It's a really good book. The book is not entirely about investing, it is also about living your life! Wow.

I recommend you to read it. Whether u know Jim Rogers or not. You will surely like it too! =)

Bus Conductor

If you frequently take buses, you will realise that sometimes,
there are bus conductors on board to check everyone's ezlink card, making sure that they pay the right fare. I remember in the past, many passengers do not pay the correct fare and the bus conductorhave to deduct additional amount of bus fare from their card. Now, with the ezlink card, I realised that most people do not cheat on paying lesser for their journey. The bus conductor do not have to deduct additional amount from their ezlink card. Maybe it's because of the ezlink card, it's harder for people to cheat. Passengers have to tap the card when they board and alight. Also, if one is caught paying lesser amount of bus fare than they should, he has to be fined $20. Wah.. so serious.

I realised that the likelihood of meeting a bus conductor in SBS bus is higher than in SMRT buses.
Hmm.. Do u think so too?

Medicinal Shops

Hello!
If u pass by the heartlands of Singapore, you will see some medicinal shops that sells herbal tea such as like Chrysanthemum tea (菊花茶).

Many people buy these herbal tea too cool themselves down. As you know, one can get heaty easily in Singapore.. due to the weather and from eating spicy food.

If u realise, in Singapore, there are 2 main chains of Chinese medicinal shops that caters to the heartlanders. They are HockHua and ZTP. If u ask for my opinion, I prefer the teas from ZTP. =)

Singapore's Changi Airport

According to the World Airport Awards 2009, the Changi Airport fell to third place. First place goes to South Korea's Incheon International Airport.

Nevertheless, I still like Singapore's Changi Airport.

-It's big and Clean.
-Changi Airport has lots shops and most of them are what I am familiar with. From BreadTalk to Crystal Jade to NTUC fairprice.. it's so convenient.. I can buy things from there if I realised that I forgot to pack something into my luggage the last minute.
-There are lots of things you can do while waiting for your flight. Shopping.. using the free WiFi.. There are also some massaging or foot reflexology machines for you to massage your legs for free while you are waiting for your flight! haha.

I hope to go to the South Korea's Incheon International Airport one day. =)

The PCK Gracious Poster

If you take the bus recently, you would realise that there's a Phua Chu Kang (PCK) and his wife, Rosie poster on the bus. It's a poster reminding you of being gracious. haha. I think it's kind of funny, and they made use of the funnyman PhuaCua Kang and Rosie to catch people's attention, reminding them to be gracious.

Whether the advertisement will be effective in reminding people to be gracious depends on individual. I think this act of being gracious should be inculcated since young. Nevertheless, I hope the ad will be successful... and enjoy the funny ad. haha.

NVPC
NVPC stands for National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre. Here, you can choose to volunteer as a group or as an individual. I choose the activities to volunteer from here too. There are a variety of areas you can choose from. For students, you can go to the CIP Centra l.

Youth Bank
There are many activites here too. The NDP and Chingay organsiers also recruit volunteers from this website.

Sports:

Sports Volunteer
Here is the website that is suppose to be a one stop portal to recruit volunteers that are interested to helping out at sports events.

Youth Olympics Games
You can be part of the history and volunteer at the world's first youth olympics games(YOG).

U can volunteer at a national library closest to your home. Don't worry, there are a variety of things you can do besides shelving books.

It is a really beautiful. U can look at some of the pictures here. There are many things to do... events, activities, workshops, tours, talks and what have you. It links 3 parks together, the Kent Ridge Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park and Mount Faber Park. There are 3 pretty bridges for u to check out too! =)
Visit the Hortpark when you are free! Enjoy the beauty of nature, you will love it.

Ya Kun Kaya from Ya Kun Kaya Toast
Kaya is a type of egg and coconut jam that is spread on toasts. Ya Kun sells one of the best Kaya Toast in Singapore. Needless to say, the Kaya from Ya Kun is also yummy!
You can try the kaya toast from Toast Box too if you happen to see one.. and while you are there, try the Milo Dinosaur!

Bak Kwa or Barbequed Pork (肉干/肉乾)
Bak Kwa is a type of sweet barbequed pork, loved by many. There are many Bak Kwa chains such as Bee Cheng Hiang (美珍香) and Fragrance (香味). Kim Hock Guan is Singapore's oldest vendor while Lim Chee Guan(林志源) is Singapore's most popular vendor. Honestly, I think the best Bak Kwa are from Lim Chee Guan. Lim Chee Guan has 3 outlets, 2 located in Chinatown, 1 located at ion Orchard. Bak Kwa is extremely popular during Chinese New Year and the price can go up to S$48/kg! Durian Puffs and other delicacies
If you do not dare to try durians, try the durian puffs from Goodwood Park Hotel instead! They sell the best durian puffs in Singapore! There are other favorites like Durian Crepe, Durian & Crunchy Hazelnut Tartlet, Durian Pudding etc. Here is the address: Goodwood Park Hotel, 22 Scotts Road.

Orchids
Orchids! Vanda Miss Joaquim, Singapore's national flower is also a type of Orchid. Singapore is one of the world's major exporter of orchid with 15% share of the world's market, according to the report by Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore here. Orchids make great gifts for your family and friends overseas. I do not of any shop that sells the best flowers, but my friend recommends FarEastFlora.

Just walk along the stretch of Orchard Road and you will see lots of shopping centres.. Ngee Ann City etc. If you are looking for casual wear for clothes targeting the youths, head down to either Far East Plaza (don't mix it up with Far East shopping Centre) or The Heeren.

If a taxi driver charge u extra, remember u can take down his name, license plate and the taxi company and complain to the taxi company.

Travelling by Bus and MRT

There are 4 different train transport lines in Singapore and they are:

The North East line - Purple line
The East West line - Green line
The North South line - Red line
The Circle line (just completed)

Tips for u:

If u are anywhere on the green line, and wants to travel to any stations after Khatib, I suggest that u take the green line and transfer at the City Hall instead of transferring at Jurong East.

The distance between each station on the red line is further than the distance between each station on the green line. Thus, u will get to your destination faster if u travel on the green line, despite the fact that there are fewer stations to your destination in the red line.
Travelling on the purple line is more expensive. If u want the cheapest way to your destination, be sure to plan your journey by visiting the smrt or sbs website.

Before coming to Singapore

Things to note before coming to Singapore

1. Weather - can be quite humid and hot at times. Temperature can range from 24 degrees to up to 35 degrees. Cooler periods are from November to end January or early Feb.

2. Tipping - Singapore do not practice tipping. Most restaurants have a 10% service charge

3. Chewing/Bubble Gums - yes. I know many of u love it. It's illegal in Singapore, but I believe u can bring in a few of them into Singapore. Do not bring in a box of them. If u can't live without chewing gums, there are 2 solutions. U can buy the theuraptic bubble gum are sold in Watsons pharmacy but u have to provide them ur name and passport number. The second solution is to go to the neighbouring country-Malaysia to get the gums.

4. Safe - Yes. Singapore is a very safe country. However, it is not 100% crime free. There are black sheep around. Do not let down your guard. Like what the authorities always say "Low crime doesn't mean low crime."

5. Shops opening hours- Shops in shopping centres usually open at around 11am and close at around 9pm or 10pm.

6. Taxis/Cabs - Make sure that the Taxi cab fares must be charged by the taxi meter. They are based on a flag down rate and the distance travelled. The flag down rate ranges from S$2.80 to S$5.00 (depending on the type of taxi). A location surcharge may also apply.

7. Buses and Trains(MRT) - If u wanna explore the island yourself, be sure to purchase the ez-link card at the transit link office that is located in many of the MRT stations. Travelling around singapore using public transport is easy and convenient.

Accredited universities in Singapore

How do u know if a degree that u r studying now is recognised in Singapore? Just make sure that the school u r studying for a degree now is in the Ministry of Education (MOE) list of universities and educational institutions. It is available right here.

This is a question that many of us ask once we graduate from high school/Junior Colleges/Polytechnics.
NUS, NTU or SMU? If u r lucky, u get offers from all 3 universities. How do u then make the choice? Here are some advice in helping u to make the right choice.

1. Choose the university which offers the course u like/do not choose the course u have no interest in.

Decision made => Yes => Congratulations! => End.

2. Choose the university that offers u ample opportunities, for research, great overseas exposure, internship etc.

Decision made => Yes => Congratulations! => End.

3. Ask your seniors, teachers, friends, family members, relatives for advices.
Ask especially those who know people who are already studying in the university and that particular course. Ask them about their workload, what do they learn, how good are the professors etc. The more people u ask, the more u will get to know about the particular university.
